WHAT WE STAND FOR

Biosafety

PBS Partner Country and Regional Initiatives

The Program for Biosafety Systems tailors its activities to the needs of its partner countries. We design our goals, gather our expertise and implement our program in close collaboration with regional coordinators and partners in Asia and Africa. This collaborative work is essential to ensure that PBS policy, economic, environmental, legal, trade and capacity building- related activities all fully and accurately support the development of national and regional biosafety regulatory systems.

Five *NEW* PBS Country Fact Sheets: Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Philippines, Uganda

Each fact sheet presents an overview of our activities and progress per country: http://www.ifpri.org/pbs/pbspubs.asp#countryfs

UGANDA: BioVision
BioVision serves as a communication hub for PBS/East Africa, in partnership with the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology. Supporting partners include the Agricultural Biotechnology Support Project II (ABSP II), the Uganda Agricultural Productivity Enhancement Program (APEP), and the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO). This website contributes to a comprehensive biotechnology/biosafety communication strategy: http://biovisioneastafrica.com/

KENYA
Applying Biotechnology in a Safe and Responsible Manner: Justification for a Biosafety Law in Kenya. August 2007. PBS Policy Brief. http://www.ifpri.org/pbs/pbspubs.asp

EAST AFRICA: RABESA publications
The Regional Approach to Biotechnology and Biosafety Policy in Eastern and Southern Africa (the RABESA initiative) is a two-year project running from June 2004 to May 2006. RABESA’s objective is to generate and analyze technical information needed to inform the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) on regional biotechnology and biosafety policy choices. A follow up phase for RABESA is currently being implemented. See project reports at: http://www.acts.or.ke/prog/agriculture/afs_rabesa.html

Two Upcoming Events!

On May 8, 2008, the International Food Policy Research Institute’s Environment and Production Technology Division will host an international expert dialogue on “Biotechnology and Biosafety in Developing Countries.” See invitation and agenda on the PBS Blog: http://pbs.ifpriblog.org/

From May 12-16, 2008 PBS will participate in the fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP-MOP 4) to be held in Bonn, Germany. See the PBS Blog for more information: http://pbs.ifpriblog.org/

The Program for Biosafety Systems (PBS) is an IFPRI-managed program that supports our partner countries in Africa and Asia in the responsible development and safe use of agricultural biotechnology. PBS effectively addresses biosafety through an integrated program of research, capacity development, and outreach. PBS is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
